An increasingly connected world demands tighter cybersecurity to protect us and our data from ransomware and other attacks, as we spend longer periods of time online and leave increasing volumes of important data in the cloud. 

Latin America accounted for 12% of total cyber attacks globally in 2022, according to cybersecurity firm Positive Technologies, with Brazil, Mexico and Argentina the locations for 44% of these attacks. And while government agencies bore the brunt of these attacks, manufacturers, retailers and financial services companies did not escape the incursions. Despite these figures, and the inevitability of an increasingly digital world, astonishingly just seven of the region’s 32 countries’ governments have plans in place to protect critical infrastructure from cyber attacks, according to the Inter American Development Bank. 

This, of course, will have to change. Latin America, therefore, represents a distinct opportunity for the cyber security industry. Even if some governments in the region are struggling to keep up, many companies are already adopting sophisticated cyber security measures, including the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance and streamline safety measures.
